Theodore Wilhelm Engstrom (1916-2006) was the head of Youth for Christ and World Vision International.
Engstrom began his career with Zondervan Publishing House in the 1940s where he soon became editorial director and then general manager.
The Christian Digest was a publication similar to Reader’s Digest that published the best current Christian articles, many in condensed form. Originating in Omaha, Nebraska, the periodical was purchased by Zondervan in 1939 and ended its publication run in 1956.
83. Soul Declension
In the literary sense, declension refers to a falling away, a condition of decline or moral deterioration.
A great pianist confessed to some of his admirers that he
practiced eight hours every day.
When
they expressed surprise that such continued practice should be necessary in the
case of one who had attained his eminence, he said something like this to them:
“If I ceased to practice for one day, I myself should be aware of it. If I ceased to practice for two days, my best friends would be aware of it. If I ceased to practice for three days, the whole world would know it.”
But while it is true that, like the pianist, we are first to
know of our own shortcoming, it is also true that oftentimes we are willfully
blind to the fact of declension, while others whose eyes have been anointed
with divine eye salve see and grieve over it.
As Christian workers we often go on preaching the same
sermons, busying ourselves with all kinds of activity, supposing Him to be “in
the company”; but He is not, for something has happened between us and Him
which has made it impossible for Him to be with us in the same old terms. –J. Stuart Holden.
John Stuart Holden (18874-1934) was an ordained minister who
served in the parish and as chairman of the Keswick Convention from 1925 to
1929. He was involved in China missions. Booked to travel of the fated RMS
Titanic in 1912 with his wife, they canceled when she became ill.
