The opera, The Flying Dutchman, by Richard Wagner is the story of the ghost of a dead captain of a Dutch ship who is condemned by the Devil to sail the sea until the Day of Judgment. Every seven years the captain is allowed to go ashore to find a woman to love him faithfully until death. The opera tells the story of their romantic encounter between Senta and the Dutchman, to whom redemption comes because of her unfailing love.
Wagner's dramatic music that is both passionate and dark makes for a powerful opera. The synopsis (argument) offered here is from a libretto for the The Flying Dutchman published by Charles D.Koppel, now in public domain. The author of the synopsis is unknown. Though the libretto copy, English version libretto by Rev.J. Troutbeck, I have is in bad repair and not worth the effort in putting it up for sale, I can still offer the summary here for reader use.
