Representative Cover
McLoughlin Bros. Children's Books
This blog post by Mary Katherine May of Quality Music and Books

Any way you look at it, McLoughlin Brothers published many children's books. They are fun to collect but hard to find in excellent condition.

The following information is from the 1903 McLoughlin Bros. catalog and shows information on its 2-, 3, 5- and 10-cent book offerings. This information will be helpful to both collectors and booksellers in identifying and describing particular editions. You will notice that though there are books in only one series, many books appear in several series. Book size will be important in determining which series a book is in as will also printing colors.

The McLoughlin Brothers published their 55th annual catalogue in 1903. Products were organized by price beginning with 2-cent toy books.

Counsels to Young Men of Modern
Infidelity and the Evidences of
Christianity by Rev. Dr. John Morison
American Tract Society, ca. 1840s
Counsels to Young Men of Modern Infidelity
     and the Evidences of Christianity
John Morison, D.D.
D. Fanshaw, Printer
201 pages
4 x 6 inches, 16 cm.

Blog post by Mary Katherine May of Quality Music and Books

From the Preface: Infidelity is no new thing. It is a plant indigenous to the sinful heart of man; it has sprung up in every age; it has more or less prevailed in every nation under the whole face of heaven; it is the palpable exhibition of that secret and deep-rooted unbelief which is unwilling to accredit any communication as divine that does not picture the Most High as a being altogether answering to the sinful imaginings of a depraved and apostate heart. By modern infidelity, then, we are simply to understand those new forms and that new energy which scepticism has put on in modern times, and more particularly since the era of the French Revolution; by which it has mightily diffused itself among all ranks of society, and has produced a class of writers capable of making their appeal to each separate branch in the community.

Conclusion

From the whole of the proceding remarks, we may infer the paramount duty of entire and unreserved submission to the authority of God in the written word.  Our reason, our conscience, our affections, are all called to surrender themselves to the heavenly vision.  In this inestimable volume God speaks to us upon subjects of the highest interest; and, refusing to listen to his voice, we seal our own unhappy doom.  “Hear ye the word of the Lord,” is the message addressed to all who possess the sacred boon; and he who, by prejudice or sin, excludes himself from the benefits of this message, which reveals the only method of salvation, is chargeable with a degree of rashness and folly which eternity itself will but fully disclose.  Let the prayer of each one who reads this little treatise be, “Open thou mine yes, that I may behold wonderful things contained in thy law!”

Uarda First Edition and What Is a True First Edition Mary Katherine May

Ebers Papyrus
Ancient Egyptian Medical Document
A popular novel that went through multiple editions immediately following its first publication is Uarda, the second historical romance after An Egyptian Princess (1864) by George Moritz Ebers.  After studying law, Ebers concentrated his studies on Egypt, with an important medical document, the Ebers Papyrus, named in his honor.

It was an illness, called long and serious by Charles Dudley Warner in his A Library of the World's Best Literature Ancient and Modern (Vol. 8, 1897), that led Ebers to take time from his juridical studies and begin his lifelong interest in Egypt, which in turn inspired his Egyptian historical novels.  He makes note of this in his Dedication.

Uarda: Dedication
Thou knowest well from what this book arose.
When suffering seized and held me in its clasp
The fostering hand released me from its grasp,
And from amidst the thorns there bloomed a rose.
Air, dew, and sunshine were bestowed by Thee,
And Thine it is; without the lines from me.

Should you be interested in purchasing a first edition of Uarda, however, you will discover many listings by many publishers printed in various years, and then what do you do? It is obvious that they all cannot be a first edition.

With diligence and persistence it is quite possible to discover which edition among the antiquarian (antique) books available for purchase on the internet is the true first among the firsts for most books. As always, finding the right keywords for searches is important.

This is NOT a first edition.
Using Uarda as Example: Which Edition is the True First Among the Firsts?
Georg Ebers wrote books in his native tongue, which was German.  It appears that his translator for Uarda was a brilliant woman, Clara Bell, who was fluent in seven languages.  Knowing of a translator, the first conclusion to draw is that the first edition of Uarda was written in German. Ebers' Preface is dated 1876, and thus the first edition was most likely published in that year or soon after. Although some editions of books known as first thus or reprint editions are significant and collectible for various reasons, generally speaking the true firsts are the editions that are most collectible. To clarify an important point, though, it must be added that not all old, antiquarian, antique books are collectible since collectability is based upon not only age and condition but also upon number of copies available, significance of content and desirability.
